Taste of Summer

Growing up in the great Central Valley, the smell and taste of peaches is “summer”.  My grandparents lived in Atwater and we lived in Sacramento.  Back in the day when Barbara Stanwyck still ruled The Big Valley on tv, there was little to look forward to on the drive down Highway 99 except stopping at fruit stands for amazing summer fruit.  And the king of summer fruit is the ephemeral peach.

My mom made a great peach milkshake in the blender.  I have continued the tradition with peaches from the Farmer’s Market.  Sometimes though, you are on the way to the Delta or returning from the Bay Area, or you do not want the mess, or you want a fun summer’s eve destination for a special treat.   Then a quick stop to Whitey’s Jolly Kone is on order.

I read about Whitey’s Jolly Kone and their amazing peach milkshakes (available in August) all summer in various regional publications.  I finally scooted across the river to try one.  It was worth the drive.  Refreshing and indulgent, it screamed “summer”.  A large shake (enough to split with someone) is $4.o0.  Although I do not know anyone who would share their shake.

Whitey’s Jolly Kone is at 1300 Jefferson Blvd in West Sacramento, on the south side of the 80 Freeway.  It is close to the Rivercats ballpark and only a minute or two from the freeway.

As you can see by this photo and the name “Whitey’s Jolly Kone” it is a blast to your past.  Make it part of your future.
